THE KINDS OF WOOD WE USE

Two types of wood (beech, oak) and two processing technologies (finger joints and without joints on the long side )make it possible for The Beds furniture to be produced out of one of four types of wood - the choice is yours. We present them below - with a natural oil finish (large samples) and in alternate finishes with oil and lacquer (small samples). A more detailed description of the types of wood and their processing is given under the samples. Please take note that the photographs are for illustrative purposes only and the color of the wood can only be assessed only on the basis of real samples, which we will gladly send to you.

WOOD SPECIES

STWD, the producer of the furniture and owner of The Beds shop, uses 100% natural wood coming from Polish, certified and properly managed woods. The wood comes only from planned fellings. Due to their ideal characteristics we use two types of wood which are highly praised by furniture makers from Poland: beech and oak.

Beech

Beech is often called the "king of deciduous trees". It is one of the most often used kinds of wood. Its constant popularity is related to its wonderful properties. Beech wood is a material of a relatively light color which can be modified. The surface of beech furniture is easily covered with wood stain and even when its color is changed, the natural structure remains visible. In order to properly protect beech furniture it is covered with transparent lacquer and natural oil. Beech is a hard wood of high durability.

Specifications:
> hardness: hard wood, 78Mpa (for comparison, pine: 28MPa, very soft)
> density: heavy wood, 720-900kg/m3
> durability: high

Oak

Oak is a wood which can be considered a paragon of durability and reliability. This is a material which takes hundreds of years to gain its remarkable character and as a result be used by humans. For example: to create household furniture. Tables made out of oak are characterized by unrivaled quality and high aesthetic properties. The natural, warm color of wood and its structure catch attention. The surface of oak furniture is coated with natural oil or lacquer which protect it and increase its longevity.

Specifications:
> hardness: medium hard wood, 67MPa;
> density: heavy wood, 800-960kg/m3;
> durability: very high.

METHODS OF JOINING AND CLASSES OF WOOD

In order to created wooden elements of proper dimensions, quality, structure and pattern, the cut tree trunks must undergo several technical processes in the sawmill: sawing, gluing into larger elements and sanding.

One of the key activities is to segregate according to class and purpose and gluing it into elements ready for use. The process of gluing is also important when it comes to the dimensional and shape stability in variable air conditions. Thanks to this the risk of bends and deformations is eliminated. We use two types of elements and semi-finished products in our production. They are created as a result a slightly different process:

CLEAR, FINGER-JOINTED

Clear-jointed wood elements finger jointed in length and width;

The finger joining method allows us to achieve high aesthetic and utility value of our products and give us the so called "clear" (without any flaws in the anatomy of the wood) product. Knots, cracks, discolored places and other anatomic flaws are removed during the production process. The final material and elements have a homogeneous, toned color and the structure of linked boards.

WILD/CORE, FULL STAVES

Wild/core, full staves wooden elements are linked just by width (without finger joints)

The technology of creating full - solid elements is characterized by not using finger joints on the length of the elements. This means we agree for natural, anatomic characteristics of the wood to show: knots, small cracks, discoloring and in the case of beech the so called false heartwood (streaks and places of much darker color). That is why they are named: wild beech/oak. Small losses in knots and small cracks are sometimes filled with a special, hardening mass in the color of the surrounding wood. The material prepared in such a manner does not have the "board" structure and the pattern of the elements is diversified by the anatomic elements of wood.

Taking into consideration all of the types of wood and joining methods, we can enumerate 4 types of materials used in the production of The Beds furniture:
CLEAR, FINGER-JOITNED BEECH, WILD/CORE, FULL STAVES BEECH, CLEAR, FINGER-JOITNED OAK and WILD, FULL STAVES OAK..
Photos of the structure of these materials have been shown in the beginning of the article.
